Canton, OH's Relient K formed in 1998 and joined the parade of Christian punk-pop artists with their self-titled 2000 debut, mixing catchy melodies and snotty attitude with spiritual concerns. The record was produced by dc Talk guitarist Mark Townsend, and the band comprised vocalist/guitarist/pianist Matt Thiessen, guitarist Matthew Hoopes, bassist Brian Pittman, and drummer Stephen Cushman. David Douglas joined up in place of Cushman by the year's end, and Relient K followed up in August 2001 with The Anatomy of the Tongue in Cheek. The album sold 300,000 copies and Relient K's momentum continued to build as they played nearly 200 shows in North America before the year closed out. A third full-length, Two Lefts Don't Make a Right... But Three Do, debuted at number 38 on Billboard's Top 200 album chart upon its release in spring 2003. The band didn't waste any time recording a fourth album; MMHMM, which was produced by lead singer Thiessen and dc Talk's Townsend and mixed by Tom Lord-Alge, was released in November 2004 by Gotee/Capitol. MMHMM scanned over 51,000 copies sold during its first week, hitting number 15 on the Top 200 and number one for Christian Albums. It eventually went gold, Relient K's third consecutive album to do so, and the band's mainstream crossover was in full swing with singles "Be My Escape" and "Who I Am Hates Who I've Been" doing very well on modern rock radio and MTV.

Pipe Organ Concert
October 12, 2008 at 4 p.m.
St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church
311 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon 15216

Presenting Dr. Paul M. Weber, Organist
Franciscan University of Steubenville, Director of the Program in Organ

Paul Weber of Franciscan University will present a concert on October 12th featuring the church’s recently refurbished pipe organ. The work on the organ at this historical church in Mt. Lebanon took more than a year and it is now one of the largest and most versatile in the area. Dr. Weber will perform works by Vierne, Rheinberger and more. This is the third in a series of concerts for the pipe organ, and is free to the public.

Paul Weber is assistant professor of music and director of the program in organ at Franciscan University of Steubenville and is an active performer, composer and author. At Franciscan University, Dr. Weber also teaches music theory and conducts the Schola Cantorum Franciscana and the Franciscan Chamber Orchestra. As a concert organist, he has recently been heard in New York, Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee and at the Hildebrandt-Tage Festival in Naumburg, Germany with the Saechsische Barok Orchester and the Concerto Vocale of Leipzig. Recent premiers of Dr. Weber's music were heard in Boston, Steubenville and New Haven. As a successful competitor, Dr. Weber has won first prize at the American Guild of Organists Region VI competition, second prize at the Arthur Poister National Competition in Organ Performance and was a finalist at the Erfurt (Germany) International Competition in Organ Performance. As a theorist with a particular interest in the music of Olivier Messiaen, he has recently published articles on Messiaen in The American Organist and Sacred Music. Dr. Weber holds the bachelor of music degree in organ and theory/composition from Lawrence University, where he studied with Miriam Clapp Duncan, Wolfgang Ruebsam (organ), Allen Gimbel and Philippe Bodin (composition). He earned the master of music, master of musical arts and doctor of musical arts degrees from Yale University, where he studied with Martin Jean, Thomas Murray and William Porter (improvisation).

About the Pipe Organ
  • Built 1962 by Casavant Freres of Montreal
  • Rebuilt by Emery Brothers of Doylestown, PA
  • New console by R.A. Colby, Inc., Johnson City, TN
  • Digital additions by Walker Technical Company, Allentown, PA
  • Organ has nine divisions on four manuals and pedal; 191 ranks of pipes and digital voices and 4,975 pipes
The instrument, which combines pipes and high-tech digital voices--sampled from the most beautiful stops from around the country, is now the largest in the tri-state area. Originally a large pipe organ built by Casavant Frères of Montreal in 1962, Emery Brothers of Doylestown, PA rebuilt the entire instrument over a year. R.A. Colby Inc. of Johnson City, Tennessee constructed a new, four-manual console. Walker Technical Company of Allentown, PA added digital voices for artistic reasons and because of limited space for additional pipework. With the digital additions, the instrument has 191 ranks of pipes and digital voices and approximately 4,975 pipes. The project required removal of pipes for cleaning, releathering of the action, and the reinstallation and tonal finishing of all pipes. In addition, the digital voices also needed to be regulated as a final step before completion. This versatile and beautiful instrument may now be used for concerts as well as its important liturgical role.

Saint Bernard Roman Catholic Church is a Pittsburgh Landmarks site and is one of the most visually striking buildings in the area. Some of the famous Jan De Rosen murals were recreated as part of the pipe organ rebuild process. New lighting has also been installed to highlight the organ pipes and the murals.

Free performances take place in Frick, Mellon, and Kennard parks each weekend through October 2008.

Twelfth Night is named for the traditional festival of misrule,
allowing for unfettered hijinx, romantic maneuvering, and general
