On Sunday, April 27, 2008 the members of the Old Economy 1830 Orchestra and the Old Economy Singers will present a “Friend-Raising Concert”, performing original selections from the music archives of the Harmony Society dating from the early 19th century. A tour of the Village will precede the performance at 2:30 p.m., followed by the concert held in the historic Feast Hall at 4:00 p.m. A reception follows in the Granary at 5:00 p.m. Admission is free; however, tour and concert reservations are requested. Old Economy Village, a National Historic Landmark site, interprets the rich history of the Harmony Society, German communal industrialists known for textile manufacturing, railroad investment, and extensive agriculture, among other things. The Society was one of the most successful and wealthiest communal groups in America in the nineteenth century. Music was an essential element of life in the Harmony Society throughout its history. From their official establishment in 1805, until their dissolution in 1905, the Harmonists sustained a tradition of musical performance.

Throughout the year, the Old Economy Orchestra and Singers perform original works composed by Harmony Society members. The Village houses the Society’s original music manuscripts, as well as many early print editions of musical scores from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Through the aid of volunteer musicians from all over western Pennsylvania, the music of the Harmonists is brought to life. The music program at the historic site began in 1998 with only a few musicians and singers performing pieces from the Society’s “Golden Age” of music, 1825 through 1831. Today as many as 20 talented vocalists and 28 of professional instrumentalists perform as volunteers throughout the year.

The Old Economy Village Music Program attempts to preserve, through performance and research, the musical heritage of the Harmonists. Plans for the future include public performances, production of a CD series and an extensive research project to transcribe and digitalize the music in the Economy archives, making it more available for scholars and musicians. An effort already underway allows performing ensembles to be accurately dressed in historic Harmonist garb.

The archives at Old Economy Village contain roughly twenty thousand pages of music in both printed and manuscript form. This collection spans the course of a century, and ranges from popular songs, marches, and waltzes of the early 19th century, through classical pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Handel, and Haydn, to opera overtures by Rossini and Verdi. The religious repertoire of the Society is represented by numerous hymnals brought with them from Germany, their own published hymnals of 1820 and 1827, manuscript hymn books copied by members of the Society, and musical compositions written by members still existing in manuscript form. The period 1825 through 1831 was the "Golden Age" of Harmonist music. During this period the Harmonists operated an orchestra of approximately 21 pieces. Under the direction of the Society’s Dr. Muller and Pittsburgh’s Charles von Bonnhorst, the orchestra expanded its repertory into an exploration of serious art music. Orchestral activities dwindled after 1832 and the focus shifted to vocal music. Numerous vocal ensembles existed at Economy, including men’s and women’s ensembles, and "Gemischtechor" (mixed choruses). Brass bands were popular at Economy in the 1870s - 1890s, even including Economy’s Brass Band undertaking tours throughout the region and the Nation.

Economy’s regular hours of operation are Tuesday – Saturday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m; Sunday, Noon to 5:00 p.m.; the site is open thru December 31st. The site is closed Mondays and holidays, except Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day (call for hours). Please allow 2 hours for a visit. Chuck Tague and Jack Solomon will lead this joint outing with the Three Rivers Birding Club and the Nine Mile Run Watershed Association ninemilerun.org Meet at the Frick lower parking lot, at the end of Lancaster Street. Coming south (toward the Parkway) turn right (west) at West Hutchinson Avenue, and follow it to the sign at Lancaster; turn right and go down to the last lot. We will bird the 9 Mile Run Valley, and learn about the ecological restoration efforts in the southern end of the park. Neotropical migrants should be showing up. Join us for brunch at Kazanky's whenever we tire or the birding slows. Last year, a Great Egret made a welcome, if unexpected, landing in one of the restored wetlands as we watched. Come and see if we get any pleasant surprises this year.

Wired to Win, an extraordinary new film in IMAX®, showcases the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life.

The brain’s abilities are illustrated through cyclists racing in the Tour De France. Over the course of the event, they are caught up in hair-raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The film raises the questions "how do they do this?" and "why do they do this?" Ultimately the answers lie within the mind and the human brain itself.
