LEMURtron is a modern musical extravaganza like you've never seen or heard before! Combining common and unusual musical instruments with robotic technology, the exhibit features a futuristic 'band' of music makers with members that include GuitarBot, ModBots and the infamous Ill-Tempered Clangier. YOU "play" the "Bots" by moving and dancing on the lighted dance floor, making your own concert of techno music.
LEMURtron is created by LEMUR (League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots), a Brooklyn, NY-based group of artists and technologists creating exotic, sculptural musical instruments which integrate robotic technology. LEMUR was founded by Eric Singer in 2000.

As part of a $1 million initiative to celebrate Pittsburgh’s 250th birthday, project curator, Tom Sokolowski, director of The Andy Warhol Museum, has crafted a partnership between area artists to work with the YouthPlaces organization.
Artists are invited to make an application for a grant to work with the YouthPlaces organization in City of Pittsburgh neighborhoods with underserved youth ages 12 through 18. Ten grants of $5,000 will be awarded to ten artists. Artists are defined as visual artists, dancers, choreographers, actors, musicians, designers, and fashion designers. Programming will take place during non-school and weekend hours within cultural or community organizations. Qualifications include the following: must be interested in CALL FOR ARTISTS working with teenagers in a community-based setting and be comfortable in culturally distinct environments; must be able to develop and implement in-depth arts experiences/programming working with the staff of YouthPlaces; must obtain ACT 33/34 clearances; must be willing to build a strong holistic approach to working with young people including building relationships within their communities.
Applications should include a professional resume and examples of artistic work (slides, tapes, and photographs of art works). Please do not send actual artworks. Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of materials. Further, the application should include a statement of no more than 500 words explaining why this grant is important to you, and how you feel this program would influence both your own art practice as well as stimulate and stretch the minds and talents of young people.

Sound and Vision: A Night With Barry McGee, Japanther, and PAPER RAD

24 Jul 2008
Curator Douglas Fogle teams up with Carnegie International artist Barry McGee for a conversation about his work and about artists' responses to the phrase "life on Mars." From his beginnings in graffiti culture in the 1980s to his emergence as a gallery artist, McGee, known as Twist in skateboarding circles, has created art that reflects an antiauthoritarian, non-institutional point of view. Using bold colors and dynamic geometric shapes, his installations have the chaotic energy of the urban experience, bringing a subversive street aesthetic into the space of the museum. For Life on Mars, McGee has transformed an ordinary hallway with his mixed-media installation. Following the talk, New York-based band Japanther performs in the museum's outdoor sculpture court with video projections by PAPER RAD.

Urinetown - the musical

24 Jul 2008
Urinetown is an award-winning satirical comedy musical that pokes fun at capitalism, social irresponsibility, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, and petty small town politics, as well as advocating environmentalism. Urinetown rejects musical theatre convention, parodying successful Broadway shows such as Les Misérables, Evita, Annie and West Side Story, and even satirizes its own significance. In reverse pantomime style, the unconventional plotline shatters audience expectations of a pleasant ending.
