On behalf of the Father Ryan Arts Center of Focus On Renewal (F.O.R.), a community-based arts center in McKees Rocks, we are seeking support for the benefit concert “Rock F.O.R. the Arts” Hosted by local radio personality and comedian Gab Bonesso, the concert will feature four local bands, “School of Athens,” “Donora,” “Trigger,” and “Meeting of Important People,” for an all-ages show at the Diesel Club in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood on Thursday, May 15 at 8 p.m.

Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International explores the important yet continually perplexing question of what it means to be human in the world today. Curated by Douglas Fogle, curator of contemporary art at Carnegie Museum of Art, the provocative Life on Mars will present the varying perspectives of 40 artists, spanning generations and continents. The exhibition will include diverse media, from painting, sculpture, and drawing to animation, film, installation, and performance—all searching for the sublime in the confusion of everyday life.

In this new exhibit, explore the math, science and beauty behind the familiar shape of the circle found in nature, machines and art, in cultures all over the world.
  • Build your own gear contraptions to turn a music box dancer, a clock and a drill
  • Step inside a giant tire and try to get it moving
  • Do the Pendulum Dance - back-and-forth plus up-and-down sometimes equals round-and-round!
  • Play with unusual cars with various shaped wheels and see the different rides they offer
  • Make a cool kaleidoscope
  • Carve wood on a lathe
  • Pretend and play in a global market full of circles

Join the Retired Men’s Luncheon Group of Pleasant Hills for their May meeting. Be entertained by Barbershop Quartets from Peters Township High School.
The meeting will be held at noon on Thursday, May 15, 2008, in the Fellowship Hall of the Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Old Clairton Road and Audrey Drive in Pleasant Hills.

Edward Donovan: Naturalist Artist, Author and Collector

Butler Little Theatre presents 'Leading Ladies'

In this hilarious comedy by Ken Ludwig, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing "Scenes from Shakespeare" on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, PA is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren't nephews, but nieces!

NRLHF Corps of Discovery

The 4th Annual National Rendezvous and Living History Foundation's Corps of Discovery is a living history teaching event. Experience living history in a pre-1840 camp environment and attend various educational seminars and workshops with a devious tomahawk and knife trail walk and an area to test your archery skills! Held on the Nichols Field area of Raccoon Creek State Park (off Route 168) near Hookstown, PA starting Thursday, May 15 through Sunday, May 18, 2008, the event is free to the general public. Visiting hours will be 10:00am-4:30pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 10:00am-3:00pm on Sunday. POWER Promises '08 ~ A Night of Hope

The 2008 POWER Promises ~ A Night of Hope benefit is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at Heinz Field in the West Club Lounge. One of Pittsburgh’s premier fundraising events, POWER Promises will feature graduates of the organization’s gender-specialized alcohol and drug treatment programs whose stories of recovery are a testament to their courage. The event, hosted by Honorary Chairs Dr. Thomas and Joy Starzl, will include dinner, a live auction and raffle, and entertainment by local jazz artist Etta Cox. The evening will also include the presentation of the “Window of Hope” award; this year’s honoree is the Women’s Leadership Initiative of GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

All proceeds will benefit POWER (Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery), a local non-profit organization that provides gender-specialized quality treatment and support services for women who are changing their lives through recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
