17 May 2008
Warm, sultry days in the garden just wouldn't be the same without the bold forms and colors of Irises and the Pittsburgh Iris & Daylily Society (PIDS) is getting ready for their annual iris show.
The Iris Show, now in its 56th year, is a juried cut flower show sponsored by the American Iris Society (AIS) that offers the opportunity to iris gardeners in the western Pennsylvania area to showcase their best Irises.
Members as well as non-members are welcome to enter. The judges are accredited by the American Iris Society (AIS) and ribbons are awarded (both at a local and national level) to the exhibits that meet specific criteria.
Entries for the juried show are accepted from 8:00 – 10:00AM on Saturday, May 17. Once the judges award the prizes the cut flower exhibit will be open to the general public the rest of the day on Saturday and throughout Sunday, May 18 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
The show is not only a way to recognize the efforts of local gardeners but also a way to get information, talk with Master Gardeners, buy new or recently introduced plants and best of all, meet other gardeners like yourself, and even join the organization. Members of the society as well as the judges and the exhibitors will be on hand to answer questions and share their experiences with irises culture and gardening in general.
The show is free and open to the public and in addition to the cut flower exhibit there will be plants for sale starting at 10:00 AM during the May Market hours––at the Phipps Garden Center in Mellon Park, Shadyside---1059 Shady Ave, Pittsburgh PA 15213, (412) 441-4442.

The Cellar Dwellers Present a Double Dose of Improv in Aliquippa
Calendar: Local Calendar
Quercus
17 May 2008

Local comedy troupe, The Cellar Dwellers, are performing a double-header show at the Sheffield Lanes Fallout Shelter this Saturday, May 17th. Both performances, starting at 8PM and 10PM, will feature over 90 minutes of theater improvisation made up on the spot, as well as performances by the Pittsburgh-based musical-comedy duo Bait & Switch.
Improvisational theater features comedy scenes and games made up on the spot with the help of audience suggestions. The Cellar Dwellers have been perfecting this hysterical form of theater for over ten years now, and this Saturday they’ll be performing two back-to-back shows. The “Family Show” begins at 8:00pm, and is for all ages; the second, “Late Show” starts at 10:00pm for people 21 and over. Both performances will feature over 90 minutes of improv.

Joining the Cellar Dwellers is the Pittsburgh-based parody duo Bait & Switch, also known as Sean Donaldson and Addi Twigg. The band puts a hilarious twist on pop songs by blending them with different genres of music, so you may hear the Black Eyed Peas’ “My Humps” as a country song, or Europe’s “The Final Countdown” as a kazoo medley.
The Cellar Dwellers are currently featured on Comcast OnDemand’s “Comedy Spotlight” channel, and perform a weekly improv workshop, “FN’Improv,” on the Beaver Valley Bowl in Rochester. This the first time the Dwellers have performed in the Sheffield Lanes’ newly renovated Fallout Shelter performance space.

“This new show is part of a series of performances promoting our Comcast TVshow, and reach as many people as we can,” says Cellar Dweller Joe Wichryk. Since the troupe’s improv show debuted last year, they have been performing improv shows throughout the Pittsburgh Comcast area.

Wired to Win

Wired to Win, an extraordinary new film in IMAX®, showcases the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life.

The brain’s abilities are illustrated through cyclists racing in the Tour De France. Over the course of the event, they are caught up in hair-raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The film raises the questions "how do they do this?" and "why do they do this?" Ultimately the answers lie within the mind and the human brain itself.
