Etran Finatawa Showcases Nomadic Blues at Carnegie Mellon’s International Festival

Event: A nomadic blues group from Niger will hold two performances at Carnegie Mellon University’s International Festival. Etran Finatawa, which means “stars of tradition,” combines modern electric guitar with calabasse (gourd) drums, string instruments, vocal music, handclapping and dancing. Performers adorn their faces with yellow paint while wearing long tunics, leather hose and turbans.

In addition to the performances, Etran Finatawa will present “Harmony: Building Peace Through Music,” a lecture about how the group fuses sounds from two of Niger’s 11 tribes — the Tuareg and Wodaabe-Fulani — as a symbol of peace and reconciliation. The tribes share pastures and water sources along the desert’s fringes, which has led to a history of conflict.

The lecture and performances are free and open to the public. Tickets are required for the performances and will be available at Carnegie Mellon’s University Center Information Desk beginning Oct. 2. More information on Etran Finatawa is available at www.etranfinatawa.com .

When:
Lecture: 2-3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11.
Performances: 7:30–8:30 p.m. and 9–10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11.

Where:
Lecture: Connan Room, Carnegie Mellon's University Center.
Performances: Rangos Ballroom, Carnegie Mellon's University Center.

Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks presents the Shakespeare comedy TWELFTH NIGHT, or What You Will for its fourth season.

Free performances take place in Frick, Mellon, and Kennard parks each weekend through October 2008.

Helen Meade makes her directing debut with the company. The cast includes Allison Fatla (Viola), Bryan Jackson (Sebastian), Valentina Benrexi (Olivia), Adam Rutledge (Orsino), Shaun Starke (Sir Toby), Dana Babal (Feste), and Joanna Getting, Melissa Tolner, Andrew Philip Roos, and Jon Poli, and Gretchen Breslawski.

Twelfth Night is named for the traditional festival of misrule,
allowing for unfettered hijinx, romantic maneuvering, and general
topsy-turvy behavior. Those who refuse to laugh are laughed at, while
Shakespeare reminds us that romance, youth, and joy are precious
commodities, not to be wasted.

Shakespeare in the Parks celebrates its fourth year of creating
free, quality performances of Shakespeare for all ages within the picturesque
setting of the city parks. For more information about PSIP, please

Wilkins School Community Center ECOFEST '08

Saturday, October 11, 2008

The Wilkins School Community Center will host its second annual Ecology Festival. The Center has recently made it a priority to help educate and inform its members and the general community about a variety of environmental issues. Now a recycling center for among other things, used sneakers, the Center is taking steps to encourage community awareness and participation in carbon footprint reduction. During the event, each child present will be able to plant a daffodil bulb on the Center grounds to help enhance its “curb appeal.”

Representatives from the following groups will have information available to participants: East End Food Coop, Frick Environmental Center, Nine Mile Run, Fossil Free Fuel, PA Resource Council, Sierra Club, West Penn Energy Audits, GASP, Bike Pittsburgh, River Rats, My Garden Dreams, Comp Recycle, Natural Selection Green Cleaning and more.

Come learn more about water barrels, compost bins, cars running on vegetable oil, non-toxic cleaning options and more. The event is free to the public. Lunch will be available, a children’s art show will be shown inside and activities for all. In addition, Anne Leonard’s “The Story of Stuff” will be shown at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm in the Center. If you haven’t seen this 20 minute expose of the true cost of manufacturing all the “stuff” we buy, it’s well worth a look.
