“Israeli Songs and Dances”
featuring Nurit Pacht, violin Gilad Harel, clarinet
with Dennis O’Boyle, violin Marylene Gingras-Roy, viola
Aron Zelkowicz, cello Luz Manriquez, piano

From the early settlers of Palestine to the rising generation of young composers, Israel has produced an abundance of vital music over the past sixty years. Our celebration continues as violinist Nurit Pacht and clarinetist Gilad Harel join local artists in music by Jan Radzynski, Nizan Leibovich, Oded Zehavi, Jonathan Keren, and others, who evoke the folk traditions of their homeland by combining Arabic, Yemenite, Hebraic and spiritual elements.

Book Fair:
It's the first weekend of June, the pool is open, the garden is planted, the parks are calling you, and enjoying leisure time is a priority on everyone's list. It's the perfect time to create your summer reading list!

Attendees can purchase new, used and unique books from a variety of vendors or check out books directly from the Carnegie Library. A children’s corner will feature stories and arts and crafts. The Pittsburgh Chess Club will be there so adults and kids can play against a master or try the game for the very first time. Stuart Boehmig author of Pittsburgh’s South Side and Downtown Pittsburgh will sign books.

A special feature of the summer line up is The Pittsburgh Chess Club. Pittsburgh is one of the oldest continuously running chess clubs in the country, and one of the largest chess libraries in the world. Chess has a deep history with America's parks and public spaces. So come play a tough game against a master, or let your child try their very first game in Market Square.

More upcoming weekend events in Market Square:
  • Every Sunday, from June 8 through the fall, Coffee in the Square will feature coffee, free Wi-Fi, a pet-friendly environment, a "lending table" where patrons of the Square can borrow a newspaper or magazine and fitness classes.
  • Weekends during Three Rivers Arts Festival will feature concerts and special art presentations.
  • Sunday, June 29 Market Square will celebrate the fruits of summer with a Berry Festival, coinciding with the Downtown celebration of the Tour of Pennsylvania bike race.
  • Saturday, July 26 Market Square will host its second Water Balloon Fight – if you missed it last year, mark your calendars now!

Wired to Win
Calendar: Local Calendar

01 Jun 2008
Wired to Win, an extraordinary new film in IMAX®, showcases the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life.

The brain’s abilities are illustrated through cyclists racing in the Tour De France. Over the course of the event, they are caught up in hair-raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The film raises the questions "how do they do this?" and "why do they do this?" Ultimately the answers lie within the mind and the human brain itself.

$8 adults; $6 children 3-12 and seniors 62+

$7/$5 for members
