For the first time ever, the Ligonier Theater will be hosting members of local Toastmasters International clubs for their annual Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contests.
The contests will be held on Saturday, November 1. Registration and socializing will begin at 3:30 PM. The event is open to the public and media. There is a $5.00 admission.
Each year, Toastmasters members conduct friendly competition in different presentation styles. Participants in the Humorous Speech Contest will deliver a highly-original presentation on a topic of their choosing while incorporating entertaining, enjoyable, and humorous material that is well-suited to most audiences. The presentations range from five to seven minutes in length.
Table Topics is the art and skill of impromptu and extemporaneous speaking. Much like is done in well-known pageants, the Contest Master will provide all contestants with a “theme” on which they will deliver a one- to two-minute response. No competitors will be able to listen to previous competitors’ responses, and Judging will be based on overall merits of the contestants’ content and delivery techniques.

This event will be the third of four rounds of competition. Participants in these contests first competed at their club level, with locations including Johnstown, Greensburg, St. Marys, Norwin, Indiana, State College, DuBois, Penn Hills, Monroeville, and Edgewood. From their club’s level, they will have competed in one of four Area- level contests. The champion and first runner-up in this event will advance to the District 13 Contests that will be held on Saturday, November 15 in Monroeville.
