9th Annual Champions for Children Benefit

03 Mar 2008
The Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF) will host its 9th Annual Champions for Children Benefit event at the Rivers Club on Monday, March 3, 2008. A VIP reception will begin at 5:30 pm, followed by general admission at 6:00 pm.
Champions for Children is an annual HCEF event when 300 community, government, business and educational leaders join together to raise funds and awareness for the approximately 3,000 children who experience homelessness each year in Allegheny County. One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from this event go to HCEF programs that provide children living in 15 area homeless shelters with the same educational opportunities and experiences as their peers.

The 2008 Champions for Children Award will be posthumously awarded to Gwen Elliott, founder of Gwen’s Girls. After 30 years of service with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, in 2002 Gwen founded a program called Gwen’s Girls for at-risk girls between the ages of 8 and 18 in Allegheny County. The organization provides a comprehensive continuum of non-traditional wellness and asset-based services in a nurturing environment.

The Linda A. Dickerson Award will be presented to Father Regis Ryan of Focus on Renewal (F.O.R.), an organization that serves the health and social services needs of McKees Rocks and Stowe Township. Over the past 32 years, Father Ryan has worked tirelessly to expand F.O.R. from a storefront operation to a vibrant organization meeting the community’s broad spectrum of needs.

Ralph J. Papa, Chairman of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania, and his wife Ruth Anne Papa are once again serving as event hosts with returning event patrons, James C. Roddey and Dr. Karen Feinstein.
General admission purchased in advance or at the door is $125 per individual. A VIP level is available for $250 per individual. Reservations can be made online at www.homelessfund.com or by calling 412.562.0154.

For information on becoming an event sponsor, host, or patron, please contact Jennifer Vickers, HCEF’s managing director, at (412) 562-0154 or e-mail her directly at jvickers@homelessfund.org.

Since 1999, The Homeless Children’s Education Fund (HCEF), a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, has been dedicated to ensuring that the homeless children living in shelters throughout Allegheny County have equal access to the same educational resources, opportunities and experiences as their peers. For more information on HCEF and how to help “provide hope through learning,” please visit www.homelessfund.org

2008 CAC SUMMER CO-ED SLOW-PITCH SINGLES SOFTBALL LEAGUE

Are you interested in summer socializing, exercise and some fun?
Then we have just the thing for you! Each year CAC organizes a spring-summer co-ed softball league consisting of 7 or 8 teams, with weekly games played every Sunday, beginning in April. Games are played on the VA Medical Center softball field near the Highland Park Zoo. We have some returning and new coaches this year, both female and male.

After the game, we gather at a local bar/restaurant where we talk, eat, and have some post game fun. The entire season is then followed by our annual sports picnic in September where we gather to share a good time.

Our league attracts not only CAC members, but many non-CAC members as well. The league is focused on fun. PEOPLE OF ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE ENCOURAGED TO JOIN, even if you have never played before. Teams are put together using a draft system. Please fill out your application completely (which can be found at www.cacpittsburgh.org or contact Meredith) as players are placed in rounds based on their application. The coaches then draft a player from each round. We have league practice / pick up games on Thursday evenings.

The cost is $35.00 for CAC members, $40.00 for CAC Alumni and $45.00 for non-members. This includes a team shirt and September catered picnic. You must be single and over the age of 21. Applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. If enough players sign up before the deadline, all additional applications will be placed on the waiting list. All players qualify for league play regardless of softball ability, and if you show up for your game on time, you are guaranteed to play. There will be no refunds after a player has been assigned to a team (mid March).

If you have any questions please call: Meredith at 412-683-8082, or Email mp22gap@yahoo.com

Please complete the application form and return it following these guidelines:
