"Nancy Crow: Works from 1988-2008" Exhibition
Calendar: Local Calendar

28 Jun 2008
The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University presents “Nancy Crow: Works from 1988-2008,” featuring more than 50 quilts that make it the largest exhibition ever of Crow’s work. On June 11, Crow will lecture and sign copies of her books at 7 p.m. in McConomy Auditorium in the University Center. Former Miller Gallery Director Petra Fallaux curates the summer exhibition, which opens with a reception June 12 from 5 to 8 p.m. and runs through August 15.
The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Rather than assembling a “greatest hits” compilation or a chronological survey of Crow’s career, “Nancy Crow: Works from 1988-2008” presents the works with an eye toward uncovering the artist’s process of discovery in these pivotal years. The exhibition includes examples of her quilts “Bow Tie,” “Chinese Souls” and “Linear Studies” series, as well as more than 30 works from the “Color Blocks” and “Constructions” series, including a half-dozen new quilts that will be unveiled at the exhibition.

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Kinorea Tigri will be “Bringing the Past to Life©

At the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania’ Beechwood Farms Nature Preserve in an “Eastern Woodland Indian ‘Over night’ Camp.”
Pittsburgh, June 28-29, 2008: Dr. Kinorea Tigri, known as “TwoFeather” to all her kids, will be “Bringing the Past to Life©…….Native Outdoor Cooking and Lifeways” to the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania on June 28 ending after camp is broken the following morning.
As a multi-lineage Native American, Dr. Tigri‘s mission is dispelling the misconceptions of the American Indian. Her exciting educational programs combined engaging hands-on demonstrations and history that highlights not only the historic native way of life, but also the present culture of Native American Indians. As a practicing Cherokee/Creek Medicine Woman she also provides insight into how many of these traditions are applicable to today’s growing understanding of our responsibilities to the present ecology, social and educational systems, and resource management.

Dr. Tigri’s program will mainly focus on the women’s roles by recreating a “travelling camp” of the Eastern Woodland Indians (EWI) of the region, circa early mid-1700’s to 1800’s while the campers are foraging the woods for items to use and to eat for dinner on Friday. At camp, the participants will participate in the cleaning, processing and preparation of foods that will compliment the Buffalo and Elk Roast, dried berries, nuts, and a corn dish that will be served in their souvenir wooden bowl and spoon. She will also elucidate on the insights into the indigenous peoples that were here before, during and after the settlement of region. Dr. Tigri’s presentation of the day and life of a EWI woman demonstrates the making of the Roasted Corn, Bean and Squash Soup with foods from her “Three Sisters” Garden using historically replicated utensils and containers or the grinding of corn to make her corn mush served with honey/maple sugar, nuts and berries. Also, the camp fire program includes Native American stories, music, and dance.

Dr. Tigri serves as a Cultural Practitioner, educator and Act 48 instructor for numerous schools/historic sites and events in the surrounding tri-state region. So come out and bring Mom and Dad for an overnight camping adventure and get ready for an adventure back in time with “TwoFeather” when she “Brings the Past to Life” with her “Native Outdoor Camp Cooking and Lifeways
