17 Sep 2008
At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 10 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches, and offering constructive evaluation. We meet on the University Of Pittsburgh's campus in L-5 Clapp Hall (Lowy Room), on the corner of Fifth and Tennyson Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, across from the Cathedral of Learning. We meet from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Wednesday of each month.

Seeing Pittsburgh Exhibit

In celebration of Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary, Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area worked with 44 Pittsburghers from eleven neighborhoods to produce the Seeing Pittsburgh project. Armed with cameras and the instructions to show us what defines their community, these residents photographed the good, the bad, the new, the old, the physical, the emotional...everything that defines their neighborhood.

80 photographs from Julia Christensen’s forthcoming book “Big Box Reuse” will be shown in an exhibition that examines how communities are changing in the shadow of corporate real estate. Also featured is the architectural construction “UnBox,” a reaction to the megastore big-box concept. Transportable, modular, and easily reusable, the UnBox will be used for creative and social uses, challenging the values and conventions of corporate retail.
The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday, 11:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. August 29-November 22. Admission is free.
Visit www.cmu.edu/millergallery or http://juliachristensen.com for more information, or call 412-268-3618. The Regina Gouger Miller Gallery is located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on the Carnegie Mellon University campus, 5000 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.

MIXED UP WEDNESDAYS

"Mixed up Wednesdays" takes place each Wednesday night at Lava Lounge located at 2204 East Carson Street on Pittsburgh's South Side. Resident DJ Ian Friend and special guests Adammmm and Sasqautch of MFPA fame spin classic and current underground dance music, old skool hip hop, 80's new wave and much more. The event runs from 10p.m. to 2a.m. with no cover, drink specials and 50 wings from the Double Wide Grill.
It's hard not get into the groove with the likes of Brazil's own CSS & Bonde Do Role blasting through the speakers. The dj's could at that point twist and turn you directly to france by spinning some of their current underground craze by the likes of Yelle, Ca$hmere or SebastiAn.
It's hard to know where else they will take you with the every growing collection of music and tracks that were purchased and debuted mere hours before the start of the event. One thing is for sure: Mixed Up Wednesdays is not for the faint heart but the party animals.

World Premiere Historical Drama | Written by Rob Barron
September 17 - 28

The making of a man. The making of a president.

In honor of the 250th anniversary celebrations for Pittsburgh and other historical sites in wouthwestern Pennsylvania, the Mountain Playhouse has commissioned a historical drama detailing the life of George Washington in the years during the French and Indian War. Penned by playwright Rob Barron, who has written several plays for the Playhouse stage including the acclaimed 5/31/90: THE FLOOD, Barron's play promises a look at the man who would rise to become a founding father of the nation while he was still a young militia officer fighting the French in the very hills that surround the Mountain Playhouse.
