Samite of Uganda

15 Feb 2008
Friday, February 15, 2008 - Samite of Uganda. With melodies both serene and haunting, African musician and humanitarian Samite mesmerizes audiences with original compositions played on kalimba (finger-piano), marimba (wooden xylophone), litungu (seven-stringed Kenyan instrument), and flutes, both traditional and western. Samite was born and raised in Uganda, where his grandfather taught him to play the flute. His primary schooling was within the King's Courtyard, where royal musicians played for the king, and that daily influence instilled in Samite the rhythms and patterns of the traditional music of his people. Samite of Uganda is presented at the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, a new, public performance venue on the campus of Shady Side Academy Senior School in Fox Chapel. Doors open at 7 PM, and the performance begins at 7:30 PM. There is ample free parking on the picturesque campus. Tickets are $22.50 for adults, $17.50 for students and seniors, and are available at www.proartstickets.org or by calling (412) 394-3353. For more information about the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, including driving directions and details about the upcoming season, visit www.shadysideacademy.org/arts/hillman, or contact David Liebmann, Executive Director, at (412) 968-3045 or dliebmann@shadysideacademy.org.

The friendly bus driver leaves us with one simple instruction: “Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!” However, Pigeon is very clever and whines, pleads, and even sings a song to get his own way. Filled with feathers, music, laughter and fun, this interactive production is suitable for ages 3 to 8, but appeals to the inner kid in everyone.
