DIVABETIC-DIVA 4 Ever
Calendar: Local Calendar
Quercus
23 Aug 2008
This out-of-the-box program which combines beauty demos, style advice, music and games with diabetes education for women, will be coming to Pittsburgh on Saturday August 23rd.

DIVABETIC™ is the brainchild and the passion of Max Szadek, the former personal assistant to the late R & B artist Luther Vandross. Vandross died in 2005 of complications due to diabetes. Szadek designed DIVABETIC’s presentation, ‘DIVA 4 Ever’ to be upbeat, interactive and sassy. ‘DIVA 4 Ever’ gets your attention with games, beauty services and prize giveaways and simultaneously incorporates education on healthy living.
"Living with diabetes doesn't have to get you down,” Szadek said. "It doesn't mean a woman has to stop living a glamorous life. There's a critical need to teach people about diabetes management in a new way, without the ho-hum presentation." DIVABETIC uses models like Aida Romaine. Szadek calls her "the most glamorous human salad.” Romaine, in her all-green outfit, inspires her audience to ‘grab greens’. She counsels her audience to become a better eater, not necessarily a perfect eater. (photo attached)

"Since 2006, almost 5,000 women affected by diabetes have experienced this diva brand of diabetes outreach. We've found that intimate conversations, along with beauty services, music, prize giveaways and fun can have an amazing impact on a woman's attitude about diabetes and lift her spirits,” Szadek said.

His audience enthusiastically agrees. "The program was uplifting and gave me a sense of comfort. I learned so much,” one woman wrote. Another said, "You are helping many people to understand that diabetes is a fact of life and it will not stop people from going forward."

Szadek sums it up. "It's an entourage of care. You can glam more in efforts to fear less."
The Expo is a joint program of the American Diabetes Association and WTAE-TV. It is free and will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on August 23, 2008

"candy dreams of SPACEMEN" by Corey LeChat
Calendar: Local Calendar
Quercus
23 Aug 2008

Corey LeChat's head is not just in the clouds, it’s in the stratosphere, mesosphere, through the thermosphere and exosphere and toward galaxies and dimensions far beyond.
With his lens trained on rocket ships and astronauts, Corey's latest photographic series launches the viewer on a journey through space and time.
The casual view captures unbelievable things, like attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion or even C-beams glittering in the dark near the Tannhauser gate.
Thankfully these moments are not lost in time, but preserved for the entire cosmos to see (and then perhaps to also dream of spacemen).
Corey LeChat's latest series of 35 mm color photographs materializes at
Moxie Dada, August 9 through 30.
1416 ARCH STREET / PITTSBURGH PA 15212 / PLANET EARTH
The opening reception, to be held Saturday, August 9 from 6-9 pm, features music from out of this world including an original theramin score composed and performed by the artist.
Space snacks and Tang will be provided for attendees.

GLORIOUS!
Comedy | Written by Peter Quilter
August 19 - August 31

The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the worst singer in the world.

Step back in time to New York in the 1940s. At the time, the city was a haven for eccentric characters struggling to make their mark. One New York socialite and aspiring opera singer, Florence Foster-Jenkins, became an immensely popular musical performer through the sheer strength of her personality, the devoted support of her adoring friends, and the unabashed self-confidence about the beauty of her stupendously horrendous singing voice. The play follows Foster-Jenkins from charity recitals and extravagant balls all the way to Carnegie Hall.
