04 Jul 2008
Don’t miss this annual celebration of America’s Independence. This event brings thousands of spectators along Brownsville Road to watch those brave "soles" participating in the Brentwood Firecracker 5-K.

The Brentwood Firecraker 5-K Run was the dream of the late Mayor Jim Joyce and Jim Rohm. The race kicks off the huge 4th of July celebration. The race donates a sizeable contribution to the 4th of July Committee and a rotating charity. (Special Olymppics, American Cancer Society, MS, American Diabetes, and Salvation Army to name a few.) The race begins at 9:00 AM.

Following the Firecracker 5-K, Brownsville Road turns in a parade route. Spectators line Brownsville Road to ensure a great spot to watch the parade which begins at Sankey Avenue and continues out to Route 51 near the Brentwood Towne Square. The Parade begins at 10:00 AM.

This year the Brentwood Business Owners Association (BBOA) will be parade Marshall.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Musical | Music by Alan Menken, Lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice
July 1 - July 20

The classic love story of Belle, a kind-hearted but misunderstood young woman, and the Beast, a pompous prince who has been turned into an animal by the spell of an enchantress. The only chance the Beast has of breaking the spell is to learn both how to love and how to be loved, lessons for which he turns to Belle for help.. Based on a well-known French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast was released as a film by Walt Disney Pictures in 1991, where its state-of-the-art animation and profoundly relevant story line made it popular with children and adults alike. The elements that make Beauty and the Beast so magical onscreen translate beautifully to the stage, where its grandeur and scale promises to thrill Playhouse theater-goers.

Pittsburgh Philharmonic FREE Concert
Calendar: Local Calendar
Quercus
04 Jul 2008
Zelienople’s Independence Day festivities just got that much more inspiring and patriotic. The Strand Theater Initiative announced today that will once again present a free concert by The Pittsburgh Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday, July 4th, from approximately 8:15 - 9:45pm at the borough’s Community Park. This will be the third year that the 60+ piece orchestra will perform as part of the borough’s annual Independence Day festival.
The Philharmonic will play a variety of patriotic and all-American classics leading up to the borough’s fireworks display. Fireworks begin at approximately 10:00pm. The organization recently changed its name from the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic in order to appeal to a wider geographic audience.

"We are very excited about bringing the Pittsburgh Philharmonic back to Zelienople in conjunction with all of the other activities that are planned," said Ron Carter, President of The Strand Theater Initiative, the non-profit group that is renovating the former movie house as a cultural, education and community outreach center, “Personally, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Independence Day than with a full orchestra playing patriotic favorites before a fireworks show? It’s become an instant classic.”

The Initiative is able to present the Philharmonic thanks to the support of Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield who helped subsidize the cost of the concert.
"We are very appreciative of Highmark for their high level of community support," added Carter, "They supported this concert, as well as the North Pittsburgh Musical Showcase that we presented in May at the Seneca Valley Intermediate School Auditorium.”

Bringing programs like this free concert is what motivates The Strand Theater Initiative and keeps the project in the public eye. The group stresses that events like this one, as well as the Musical Showcase and The Summer Classic Film Series, demonstrates the variety of programming that will be available on an ongoing basis once the theater completes its renovation. Unfortunately, the Film Series will not take place this year due to the construction work and equipment that is being used on the property’s rear lawn.
The Initiative completed interior demolition work in August, last year. After a series of delays involving final design and contractor issues, work resumed in earnest on June 2nd. The first phase is scheduled to be completed by the end of September or beginning of October this year, allowing the theater to welcome patrons for the first time in over twenty years.

For additional information and interview opportunities: Ron Carter, President & Executive Director, The Strand Theater Initiative, 724.742.0400, thestrand@zoominternet.net.
