At Toastmasters, members learn by speaking to groups and working with others in a supportive environment. A typical Toastmasters club is made up of 10 to 30 people who meet once a week for about an hour. Each meeting gives everyone an opportunity to practice conducting meetings, giving impromptu speeches, presenting prepared speeches, and offering constructive evaluation. We meet on the University Of Pittsburgh's campus in L-5 Clapp Hall (Lowy Room), on the corner of Fifth and Tennyson Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, across from the Cathedral of Learning. We meet from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Wednesday of each month.

Secrets of Circles

Circles are pretty amazing shapes. Look around, you’ll find them everywhere - wheels, clocks, flowers, doorknobs, Frisbees, coins, even the bagel or pita bread in your lunch.
In this new exhibit, explore the math, science and beauty behind the familiar shape of the circle found in nature, machines and art, in cultures all over the world.
  • Build your own gear contraptions to turn a music box dancer, a clock and a drill
  • Step inside a giant tire and try to get it moving
  • Do the Pendulum Dance - back-and-forth plus up-and-down sometimes equals round-and-round!
  • Play with unusual cars with various shaped wheels and see the different rides they offer
  • Make a cool kaleidoscope
  • Carve wood on a lathe
  • Pretend and play in a global market full of circles

MIXED UP WEDNESDAYS

"Mixed up Wednesdays" takes place each Wednesday night at Lava Lounge located at 2204 East Carson Street on Pittsburgh's South Side. Resident DJ Ian Friend and special guests Adammmm and Sasqautch of MFPA fame spin classic and current underground dance music, old skool hip hop, 80's new wave and much more. The event runs from 10p.m. to 2a.m. with no cover, drink specials and 50 wings from the Double Wide Grill.
It's hard not get into the groove with the likes of Brazil's own CSS & Bonde Do Role blasting through the speakers. The dj's could at that point twist and turn you directly to france by spinning some of their current underground craze by the likes of Yelle, Ca$hmere or SebastiAn.
It's hard to know where else they will take you with the every growing collection of music and tracks that were purchased and debuted mere hours before the start of the event. One thing is for sure: Mixed Up Wednesdays is not for the faint heart but the party animals.

You are cordially invited to discover western Pennsylvania’s transformation into spring. This delightful walk with Esther along the Butler Freeport Trail is a long-standing tradition. Esther knows this trail like the back of her hand and can find dozens of flowers arrayed in their striking beauty. Butterflies will celebrate their rites of passage from chrysalis to stunning beauty. Birders can expect to find Gray Catbird, Cedar Waxwing, Warbling Vireo and Rose-breasted Grosbeak. We may even hear a Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
This trail is wheelchair accessible. Wear a hat. Bring your binoculars and field guides, lunch and beverages. Outings are not exclusive to members. Everyone’s invited. Call Susanne at (412)771-4737 to let us know you’re coming.

Wired to Win

Wired to Win, an extraordinary new film in IMAX®, showcases the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life.

The brain’s abilities are illustrated through cyclists racing in the Tour De France. Over the course of the event, they are caught up in hair-raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The film raises the questions "how do they do this?" and "why do they do this?" Ultimately the answers lie within the mind and the human brain itself.

$8 adults; $6 children 3-12 and seniors 62+

$7/$5 for members
