Erntefest
Calendar: Local Calendar

27 Sep 2008

Here is a great event to transition everyone back into the fall and winter seasons. On Saturday, September 27th, Old Economy Village celebrates Erntefest, a traditional German harvest festival. The event runs from 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. The Village celebrates Erntefest each year to demonstrate ways that the Harmonists, and other people living in western Pennsylvania, would have prepared for winter in the nineteenth century.
Visitors of all ages have a chance to learn how to make cheese, sausage, butter, apple schnitz, cider, ginger beer and a variety of other traditional fall foods of the 19th century. There will be broom making, meat smoking, coopering, bee keeping, wine making, beer brewing and more, all activities that would have been done by members of the Harmony Society in the years before the Civil War. Of course, before playing old-time games such as sack races, graces and walking with stilts, children of all ages must do their chores - pumping water, washing clothes, milking the “cow,” making rope and rolling barrels.

In addition to the many site-wide activities, the Village’s historic buildings and exhibits will be open. For those visitors who enjoy food, there will be a selection of German favorites available from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., all prepared by members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Harmonists original house of worship which is located across the street from the historic site. Old Economy’s homemade Concord grape pies made from fruit grown on Old Economy’s vines will also be offered.

To preview an Erntefest 2008 You Tube video, visit www.oldeconomyvillage.org. For more information on Erntefest at Old Economy Village, call (724)266-4500 or email
ra-oldeconomy@state.pa.us. The ticket office and admission entrance are located in the Visitor Center at 270 Sixteenth Street in Ambridge. Tickets are $8.00 per adult and $5.00 for children 4-17; children under 4 are free. Admission is also free to members of the Friends of Old Economy Village. The Visitor Center is located at 270 Sixteenth Street, Ambridge, with free parking available.

Pittsburgh 250 events cycle across historical passage, culminate at Point State Park for the PNC Legacy Trail Ride celebration
Calendar: Local Calendar

27 Sep 2008
From September 27 to October 4, hundreds of bicyclists are set to participate in The PNC Legacy Trail Ride celebrating the Pittsburgh region’s 250th birthday and linking of the Great Allegheny Passage to the C & O Canal Towpath, creating a 335-mile hiking and biking trail that retraces a young George Washington’s trailblazing journey from Virginia to the forks of the Ohio.

Pittsburgh 250, which marks the anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh in 1758, is both a celebration of the region’s rich history and a showcase of lasting investments in its quality of life. Pittsburgh 250 encourages all to “imagine what you can do here” in building a bright future.
The PNC Legacy Trail Ride features four main events along the Great Allegheny Passage, ending on Saturday, October 4:
  • “Celebration Saturday” in six Trail Towns on September 27
  • A bicycle relay ride that speeds from Washington, D.C. to Pittsburgh in just 24 hours
  • A week-long sojourn ride by 250 cyclists, also from Washington to Pittsburgh
  • A community ride and hike by families who are invited to join the cyclists on their final sprint into renovated Point State Park in Pittsburgh

Celebration Saturday is scheduled for Sept. 27. Six towns along the trail—West Newton, Connellsville, Ohiopyle, Confluence, Meyersdale, and Rockwood—will celebrate the history and new outdoor amenities they share along the Great Allegheny Passage. Each town will offer trail-related activities, food, entertainment, and the unveiling of a public art project designed to create vibrant and attractive connections between the trail and the towns.

Beginning in Washington, D.C on Oct. 3, a 24-hour bicycle relay ride involving 18 teams of six cyclists will ride through the night carrying a Congressional proclamation to Pittsburgh.

On Sunday, Sept. 28, a sojourn ride by 250 cyclists will begin in Washington and end at Point State Park on October 4. As the riders arrive in downtown Pittsburgh, families are encouraged to join in the community ride and hike at PNC Firstside to the finish line at Point State Park. Those who want to participate in the final leg can register at www.bike250.org .

The PNC Legacy Trail Ride will conclude with a concert featuring Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers, and a spectacular fireworks display launched from downtown skyscrapers.

The events kick off Pittsburgh Celebrates 250, a two-month birthday party that includes the Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, a performing and visual arts celebration; the Festival of Lights, which will illuminate and decorate buildings and outdoor spaces; and many other events.
