Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights

Celebrating our region’s cultural innovation, the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights, October 10 - November 20, 2008, will be the largest light festival of its kind in the United States. The festival will transform building facades in Downtown and Oakland into large-scale works of art in addition to more than 15 places of worship throughout Pittsburgh. Buildings include Katz Plaza and the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown and the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland. The festival will include free music events at Katz and Schenley Plazas. All light projections and related events are fee to the public.

Pink Ribbon Round-up Set for October
The third annual Pink Ribbon Round-Up (PRR) is scheduled to take place October 10 and 11, 2008. The PRR is a two-day charity event for breast cancer research featuring a Western-themed gala and horseback ride.
For the third year, Lexus of North Hills is a major sponsor and is once again providing the venue for the kick-off Western-themed gala on Friday, October 10. At $125 per person, the evening will include food, beverages, espresso and dessert bar, live entertainment, a silent auction and an exciting new “Reverse Auction” for cash.
On Saturday, October 11, the PRR horseback ride will take place in North Park from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with registration from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. The entry fee for riders is $25, plus each participant is asked to raise $100 minimum in donations with prizes being awarded to the top four fund raisers. All riders must bring their own horse.

Celebrate Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights Kick-Off on October 10, 2008
with a free outdoor concert.

• Join Pittsburgh Jazz Legend Etta Cox at Agnes R. Katz Plaza to celebrate the kick-off of the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights on Friday evening, October 10 from 6:00 – 9:00pm with a free outdoor concert under the light projection designed by Corentine Buron for ARTLUMIERE. At approximately 8:30pm an official “flip the switch” ceremony will start the festival.

• Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights will kick-off Downtown on Friday
evening, October 10th at Agnes R. Katz Plaza in partnership with the
Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s International Festival of Firsts and then
premiere in Oakland with the lighting of the Cathedral of Learning on
October 15th in tandem with the debut of Squonk Opera’s new work,
Astro-Rama, at a free outdoor performance in Schenley Plaza. Events are
weather permitting.

With more than 20 lighting installation sites, the Pittsburgh 250 Festival
of Lights will be the largest light festival of its kind in the United
States. Timed to coincide with the height of the visual and performance
arts schedule, the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights goal is to get local
residents and tourists into key cultural areas to enjoy not only the
artistic lighting, but experience and support the tremendous array of
entertainment and culture in this region.

Introduced in 2007 and back by popular demand, building facades will once again be transformed into unique works of art created by some of the most accomplished international lighting designers working with cutting edge technology and illumination techniques during the Pittsburgh 250 Festival of Lights.
