Annual Hosta Show
Calendar: Local Calendar
Quercus
07 Jun 2008
Not so long ago Hostas were almost unknown to gardeners across the USA. Thanks to cutting-edge breeding and careful selection, Hostas are available in a wider range of colors than ever thought imaginable. Some display interesting textures that play with light and shadow and others sport showy blooms for an extra touch of summer beauty. Add improved weather and slug resistance and sun-fast foliage color, and it's no wonder these maintenance-free perennials are enjoying widespread popularity with today's gardeners.
At this time of the year you can see many hostas already enhancing gardens all around our region and on Saturday, June 7th you will have the opportunity to earn ribbons for your best hostas or simply enjoy the show presented by the Daffodil & Hosta Society of W PA (DHSWPA).
The Hosta Show is a juried show that offers the opportunity to hosta enthusiasts in the Western Pennsylvania area to showcase their best hostas. Members as well as non-members are welcome to enter. The judges are accredited by the American Hosta Society and ribbons are awarded to the exhibits that meet specific criteria.
Entries for the juried show of cut leaf as well as potted hostas/arrangements will be accepted from 6:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday, June 6th, and from 7:00 to 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 7th. Once the judges award the prizes the exhibit is open to the general public to enjoy.
The show will take place at Soergel Orchards Farm Market—You can reach Soergel Orchards by taking I-79 and getting off at the Wexford Exit to 2573 Brandt School Rd, Wexford PA 15090, Phone: (724) 935-2090
The show is not only a way to recognize the efforts of local gardeners but also a way to get information, talk with Master Gardeners, buy new or recently introduced plants and best of all, meet other gardeners like yourself, and even join the organization. Members of the society as well as the judges and the exhibitors will be on hand to answer questions and share their experiences with hosta culture and gardening in general.
The show is free and open to the public and besides the exhibit there will be hosta plants for sale starting at 10:00 AM and running throughout the show until 5:00 PM.

Country Musical | Written by Mark St. Germain
June 3 - June 15

The musical chronicles the life of the First Lady of Country Music. Best known for her runaway hit "Stand By Your Man" in 1968 - a song she said she wrote in 15 minutes - Wynette lived a complicated and often tumultuous life that saw her married five times. While this musical biography covers plenty of Wynette's musical career, and includes 26 of Wynette's hit songs, it also looks at Wynette's personal life, which includes a bizarre 1978 abduction that saw Wynette taken from Nashville shopping center and beaten - a crime that was never solved. A thoroughly moving and entertaining musical, Stand By Your Man promises something for everyone.
