For details, check out www.wyep.org.

Friends,

It may seem sometimes that the moons are in conspiracy against you, racing as they do across the sky, your winter breaking for spring just in time to have a few drinks before autumn rears its hallowed head.

But with the inexorable passing of time, like amphetamine sulfate through an hourglass, We Many Vipers bear some solace in the fact that as the ice cubes of each month melt into the next, we’re granted one night to swirl ‘em around into a fine concoction of Rhythm ‘n’ Booze for a quick dance and a fall-down at the hole-in-the-wall.

Sunday mornings might be about Churchin’ with a hurtin’ head, but at least once a month, Saturday Night is Pure Gospel, my friends: The In-The-Beginning-Was-The-Word of ‘60s R&B, the truth-spake of the Tribe of Motown, the Gospel of Northern Soul! The way We Vipers see it, if you’re going to have to beg forgiveness on Sunday morning, you best make that begging juicy on Saturday Night.

And far be it from We Vipers to do it alone! This month we’ve called upon the services of a couple o’ Redcoats whose grammar schools voted them Least Likely To Successfully Dance Yet Most Likely To Make You Do So: Des Parker* and Johnny Beggs**, direct from the U.K. for their ONLY U.S. DJ APPEARANCE!

Friends, we hail from a long line of Saturday Night Gospel preachers in the Steel City. Far be it from me to compare our vagueries of hedonism to the legends of Gus Greenlee, Teenie Harris and the like. But come time to preach the Gospel, let us do their strong spirits proud, raise a glass and have a dance, and see where the R&B Word leads us.

*Des Parker performs courtesy of New Century Soul Club. Parker has quickly become one of the biggest DJ names on the U.K. Northern Soul scene, regularly headlining internationally known soul nights from London to Manchester to France and right here in Pittsburgh, where he and Johnny built a following guest DJing at Soulcialism!

**Johnny Beggs is a bona fide legend of Northern Soul, having served as a resident DJ at The Torch – arguably the crucible in which Northern Soul was formed – in his native Stoke-on-Trent while still a teenager, in the early 1970s. He still spins practically full time, as one of the most sought-after DJs around the U.K. and Europe!

Wired to Win

Wired to Win, an extraordinary new film in IMAX®, showcases the amazing ability of the human brain to overcome adversity, accomplish the near-impossible, and power each of us to victory and success in life.

The brain’s abilities are illustrated through cyclists racing in the Tour De France. Over the course of the event, they are caught up in hair-raising crashes, dramatic battles over the Alps and Pyrenees and action-packed descents down steep mountain roads. Their ultimate goal? The finish line on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

The film raises the questions "how do they do this?" and "why do they do this?" Ultimately the answers lie within the mind and the human brain itself.

$8 adults; $6 children 3-12 and seniors 62+

$7/$5 for members

31 May 2008
May is National Tennis Month and to encourage people of all ages to pick up a racquet, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is serving up a community initiative across America. From coast to coast, community tennis organizations will host “Tennis Block Parties” to encourage people of all ages and abilities to take to the court.
The event is free and open to the public.

Tennis Block Parties offers attendees a day of free tennis, interactive games and attractions, and the opportunity to learn and enjoy the benefits of the game – from fun and competition, to lifestyle and fitness.
The event will also debut the USTA’s innovative new play format called QuickStart Tennis which was created to help children, ages 10 and under, find success learning tennis from the very first swing. The new format scales down all aspects of regulation tennis—including equipment, court dimensions, and scoring—so that the game becomes specifically tailored to their age and size.
