For thousands of children this summer, they are doing more than learning the game of golf when they hit the links.
First Tee of Pittsburgh is using the core elements of the game as a platform to teach kids how to get along in the game of life.

“It really gives him a lot of social skills that he needs, like patience and perseverance, and the thing I love about golf, it's a gentleman's sport,” said Mimi Perez as she recently watched her son practice.
“Folks who are golfers know that golf can be a very frustrating sport, and that little teeny ball doesn't always go where you want it to,” said Marc Field, the executive director of First Tee of Pittsburgh. “So what you can learn is self-management. How do you control your emotions? How do you learn to master a difficult task? How do you do something and not get frustrated and quit?”
Field said life skills, values and healthy habits are seamlessly integrated with golf lessons.
The group has established nine core values that are connected with the game of golf such as integrity, sportsmanship and confidence.
“The coaches are really nice, and I like how we learn the life skills along with golf,” said Patrick Bush, 10, of Belle Vernon.
Bush is one of 26,000 young golfers reached by First Tee each summer.
He plays at Bob O'Connor golf course in Schenley Park -- one of nine locations around western Pennsylvania.
“Many donors provide equipment and supplies so that we provide everything the kids need for free. They get clubs and balls and everything to participate,” explained Field.
