What is that smell?
|
Picture a warm day followed by a cool night. As dusk passes into night, a smell encroaches.
It is a not a smell of honeysuckle or sweetness. It is a noxious smell, a mixture of exhaust
and chemicals, caused by a weather phenomenon called inversion.
As explained by Mrs. Graham, Section Head of Air Quality Planning at the Allegheny County Health
Department, an inversion occurs when the ground temperature is cooler than the air above, causing
pollution to be trapped near the ground and your nose.
Normally air temperature gets cooler as altitude increases, allowing pollution to rise and float
away. However, if the air temperature is cooler near the ground than it is at a higher altitude,
even by a couple of degrees, a bad smell can occur.

Notice a bad smell?
|
Call the Allegheny County Foul Odor Hotline at 412-687-ACHD (2243) to report the smell or visit
GASP to learn more about air quality issues.
